Alpines – “Oasis”...

A man can’t live on rap alone. Good thing when I’m in music discovery mode I can count on sources to keep feeding good shit to listen to. OnSmash supplied some brand new heat from Alpines, a London electronica group with a secret weapon: the lead singer, Catherine Pockson. She can sing with conviction, as she does in last year’s single “Lights.” But in “Oasis” there is a vigor and clarity to her voice that rides perfectly over the production of her musical partner, Bob...

Jhene Aiko – “Everything Must Go” (alternate) Jan31

Jhene Aiko – “Everything Must Go” (alternate)...

For the record I listened to the alternate version first and was instantly sprung on the jazzyfatnasteeness. I was also prepared to diss the original into oblivion. Now after multiple listens, they both have their purposes for life. The original is certainly modern R&B/pop with its fuzzy keyboards, hard kicks, and some ethereal buzz in the background. The alternate is the song chopped up and rearranged at a jazz club. Kudos for No I.D. for adapting his styles cross-genre to find musical vehicles for Jhene’s breathy voice. (Hypetrak) original flavor jazzy...

Jordan Brand x October’s Very Own plan to release of exclusive Jordan 10s and 12s...

Wheelchair Jimmy has some new kicks that yall will be cleaning with a toothbrush. Drake has partnered with Jordan Brand to create Air Jordan 10 OVO and Air Jordan 12 OVO. Alleged they will be coming out soon… no release date yet. Per Sneaker News, “all four feature a deluxe stingray leather treatment.” I don’t know what that means, but I like it. Personally 12s > 10s, but you can decide for yourself. Curren$y feat. Action Bronson – “Godfather 4” Jan30

Curren$y feat. Action Bronson – “Godfather 4”...

Produced by Jet Life cohort, Nesby Phips, who I’ve been a big fan of since “Prioritize,” “Magic,” and “Funk’d Out As Is.” From the upcoming Curren$y album, The Drive In Theatre. (2dopeboyz) BTW I have no problem with Curren$y’s dollar sign, because it goes with his name. You still got a problem? Make you own damn blog and suck a...

A$ton Matthews feat. Action Bronson and Flatbush ZOMBiES – “TLC” Jan30

A$ton Matthews feat. Action Bronson and Flatbush ZOMBiES – “TLC”...

Real talk. I fucking hate rappers who substitute dollar signs for the letter “s” in their name. If you ain’t Too $hort, you ain’t got enough money to justify the dollar sign anyways. Stay aspirational but stay in your lane. BTW maybe another day I’ll be interested in 3 verses from Aston Matthews, but today I’ll take one each from Action, Meech, and Juice....

Cam’ron & A-Trak – “Humphrey” Jan29

Cam’ron & A-Trak – “Humphrey”...

I didn’t fight my way up to the top of the food chain to be a vegetarian. Even if you didn’t know it was coming out, this is what you’ve been waiting for today. Killa Cam spitting hot fyah over some throwback early 00s production. From the upcoming Federal Reserve EP. Production by A-Trak and Party Supplies. (Yeah the dude who produced Blue Chips and Blue Chips 2 for Action Bronson.) Fuck wit dis immediately if not soon....

The Foreign Exchange feat. Eric Roberson and Shana Tucker – “Better” Jan28

The Foreign Exchange feat. Eric Roberson and Shana Tucker – “Better”...

I am a big fan of Phonte (Tigallo Tigallo Tigallo). And the Latin piano groove is hot. I am not a big fan of neo-soul. And that’s the sour taste in my mouth when I listen this song. I wish this track was 3 x 16 bars of Phonte with Phonte on the hook. Instead it’s not. I think my friends will like this much more than me. (source / buy the...

BANKS – “Brain”

It’s a been a NY minute since BANKS dropped her fascinating London EP. Last night BANKS blindsided her fans with the art for upcoming single on Instagram. Now the pressure is on. Does the single live up to her past successes? It does. But does BANKS take an evolutionary step towards carving out her own sector in the crowded singer/songwriter electropop set? She does. I am sure Lorde comparisons are inevitable. This a not a fully-realized record, but the importance is established her niche. I know her best is yet to come, and I’ll keep...

Rick Ross feat. Jay Z – “The Devil Is A Lie” Jan24

Rick Ross feat. Jay Z – “The Devil Is A Lie”...

Rozay has a preternatural knack for choosing luxurious beats to pair with his baritone drawl. The combination is cake, not some shit Duncan Hines butter yellow cake mix, but multi-layered and decadent like the life he portrays in his raps. But when he is paired with Jay Z (no hyphen), Rick steps up his lyrically. There’s more gusto. More wordplay. And the concepts are higher. While I still prefer “Free Mason” as their best pairing, “The Devil Is A Lie” is great precursor to the Mastermind LP. Enjoy this unofficial fan-made video, as if the Illuminati conspiracy idiots didn’t have enough to work with before...

Nickelus F – “’99 Alive” Jan23

Nickelus F – “’99 Alive”...

I bet you heard that horn and quickly sat up on your seat. Hot damn! That horn is straight fyah. You start to nod your head soon as you heard me speak. Fuck, Nickel F’s rasp does command my attention. You turn me up. You ball your face. You clench your teeth. And nod your head to all this pop-off, and then roll right down the street. Rob on the Trak does the production. Nickelus F continues on his streak of dropping hot singles on those who know. (Twitter / Nah Right) And if you ain’t cop that Vices album, do it now. No plug, it’s for your own benefit. Nickelus F – GotDamnMurdah! from SHHO on...

Duck Sauce – Duck Droppings EP...

Louie Louie Louie Lou-EEEE Louie Louie Louie Lou-AHHH Whether picking through Boney M‘s catalog or staging an elaborate mockup of The Midnight Special, Duck Sauce (Armand Van Helden and DJ A-Trak) have been injecting a bit of kitsch in the “serious” world of house music. OK so house music is not serious stuff, but its devotees are very resolute in legitimizing the genre beyond club anthems and background filler. That is the appeal of all the Duck Sauce tracks: melody and hooks. Once just the anchors of pop music, even Duck Sauce’s throwaway tracks grab you and get you...

Tycho – “Montana”...

To transport one’s mind out of body through music is a formidable task for any artist. While pop music is made to make people feel some type of way, Tycho makes atmospheric music awashing the listening in dulcet tones and long strings. Some of his songs feel lifted straight from the ocean surf or a moonlit walk. “Montana” is bit more jangly than his previous work; an appreciated iteration that still stirs the mind into motion. There’s more tempo and defined movements flowing into each other. Never lingering, always...
