Les Sins – “Bother”...

Full disclosure: Les Sins is Toro Y Moi is Chaz Bundick. Les Sins is his four-by-four dance production project. Ya know, because artists need to breathe and manifest ideas outside their prescribed genre. And I’ll assume he’s a little like me; he doesn’t want his dance gravy bleeding into his indie rock steak. Sure steak and gravy sound great together, but some flavors deserve their own palate. Now I’m fucking hungry. “Bother” holds down a head-bobbing, body-moving groove until a stunning hallelujah moment straight out of a sci-fi version of Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Actually, Chaz has been experimenting a lot with his dance production, but this is the first single off a new album, Brother, to be released soon. Let’s go already! (OnSmash/Carpack...

Hudson Mohawke – “Chimes”...

“Chimes” from Hudson Mohawke sounds very familiar. Oh yeah, it’s on that Apple MacBook commercial with the stickers. Well, now that he’s getting paid, let’s talk about the music. Back in the day, selling out was taboo, but that was creating a song with pop flourishes. Creating a song as a soundtrack for life or a movie was no damn problem. It’s still true today. Some situations to play “Chimes” at maximum volume: to put that battery in my back and go hard to synchronize with shit falling down around me for my football/basketball highlights mix VIDEO MONTAGE! to get others hype when the party is dying down BTW I only noticed the chimes after the 2nd play. Now I really listen for them. That’s the thing about trap, the quietude then the jarring. Keeps you on your toes. But dem horns doe! Chimes EP by Hudson Mohawke will be out on September 29....

Waze & Odyssey vs R. Kelly – “Bump & Grind 2014”...

From reading the C-Section of this video, people really don’t like Waze & Odyssey’s reinterpretation of R. Kelly’s “Bump n’ Grind” as a house song. They point out the direct sampling of the Nightcrawler single “Push The Feeling On” and ridicule the usage of the wrong album in the video. (“Bump n’ Grind was on 12 Play obviously, not TP-2.com, even though that cover is far more ridiculous and indicative of the ego of Robert Sylvester Kelly.) Anyways I can’t be bothered by all this electronica minutiae and trifling. All I know is the shit is 4×4 and built for dancing and drugs and girls. And dudes like me have to find any way to find joy in this monotony, so if the song happens to include the Pied Piper of R&B, I like it. Oh shit, I almost forgot to include my video observations because there are so many bizarro folks on display. that’s clearly Dan the Automator as Chinese Urkel flip the table…turn up! a Black male mannequin?! nice fat cholo who doesn’t look especially Mexican enough with fake James Harden the Wendy’s girl is the Bear!!! Socko! that’s the most G’d up sign language I’ve ever seen the video would’ve been better with R. Kelly Waze & Odyssey have a large library of stuff, although I’ve never heard of them until this. Just stick with the formula: one 90s/00s R&B song + two 90s dance songs + wacky video = profit! Come on now, Ginuwine needs a check,...

Flosstradamus feat. Elkka – “Rebound”...

The new Flosstradamus single “Rebound” featuring Elkka is a slower and sexier track vastly different from their high energy work but still appealing. Too many times electronic artists will settle for a light touch on vocals, but Elkka’s vocals are assured and strong throughout the track. This is really a pop tune encased in an EDM candy shell. Since I like it, I am assuring its demise. “Rebound” is available on iTunes. (V...

Erick Arc Elliott – “Love Shawty”...

I get the sense Erick Arc Elliott AKA Erick the Architect never wants to pigeonholed as a rap producer. His production work has been varied, and now he releases an instrumental track “Love Shawty” with sprinkles of vocal samples from “Shut Up” by Trick Daddy and friends. But now with the marching band horns and early 00s trap drums scrubbed away, Erick serves up a bed of ethereal bells and bouncing drums. And for some reason Brandy & Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” popped into to my head. Although if you did flip the track to 45RPM… I digress. “Love Shawty” is a great exercise of how to repurpose and re-imagine hip hop beats and tropes into something slightly against tradition. Soundcloud says this is from Arcstrumentals Vol. I. I want that immediately....

Jaded Incorporated – “The Big Knock”...

My definition of jitting after watching one video with Brandon “Jitting Jesus” Hobbs: footwork + jumprope pantomiming + next level shit. I almost tore my Achilles reclining into my chair to type this out. Hobbs tears through the track in a furious dust cloud. The album, The Big Knock, by Jaded Incorporated is available now....

Club Kuru – “All The Days”...

I tried digging up a picture of who makes up Club Kuru, a musical project from producer Laurie Erskine. This is what I found on my background check. ‘ku·ru’ – an incurable neurological disorder transmitted among members of the Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea via cannibalism. Hot damn! Communicable brain disease spread by cannibalism. Well, let’s see what the music tells me. It’s a little James Blake but a bit more sunny melodically. That, of course, belies the sobering lyrics about the pitfalls of love, freedom, the choices we make, and the options not considered. And all this comes to a cracking crescendo of stuttering drums. BTW the video, directed by Danny Sangra, is an incredible visual experience. Sublime storytelling. A picturesque setting. The video matches the tremulous energy of the track beautifully. (Okayplayer/Clash/Nowness) Club Kuru: All the Days on...

BANKS – “Goddess”...

New NEW BANKS. The title track of her debut album, Goddess. Just hit play and luxuriate in the downtempo harmony and sensuality of BANKS’s voice and Lil Silva’s production. (NPR) (Ed. note – pls secret token work for me! if the shit below is missing or doesn’t work, click here to...

Duck Sauce – “NRG”...

This “NRG” video is fucking amazing. It’s almost as good as “Turn Down For What” but still witty and…energizing! Quack is available on iTunes. “NRG” remixes available as well on iTunes. (OnSmash/Fool’s Gold/Buzzfeed) Buy #NRG for $19.95 now! IT CURES EVERYTHING! @DuckSauceNYC http://t.co/e5gBlxSZ83 pic.twitter.com/9lvIHN8FN6 — OnSMASH (@OnSMASH) April 23,...

Major Lazer feat. Pharrell Williams – “Aerosol Can”...

As Diplo’s Major Lazer gets stretched further and further away from its Jamaican dance roots and closer to modern American dance music, at the very least, it’s keeping people’s feet moving. However, the luster is gone leaving Diplo to scramble for bigger acts to fill the voids of his construction and continue to draw the masses to his music. Last year Diple enlisted Bruno Mars and 2 Chainz for that “Bubble Butt” calamity…that video is a debacle. Celebrity guests abound in “Scare Me,” before finally coming back to Jamaica for “Watch Out For This (Bumaye).” So the smart thing to do is make a visually appealing yet simple presentation for “Aerosol Can” which was accomplished in spades by using graffiti legend, Mike Giant. Apocalypse Soon is out now. (Karen...

Sigma – “Nobody To Love”...

In January London dance duo Sigma released a series of uptempo remixes to Kanye West’s “Bound” to great success. Basically by subtracting Ye’s raps and the Ponderosa Twins Plus One’s vocals and adding drum-and-bass, the UK massive have made this their #1 single. With a dual Beckys gallivanting through South African beaches and countryside, this could be a hit anywhere. (Complex) Original swirly flavor with Ye and...

Watch The Duck feat. T.I. – “Girlfriend??”...

This is my big criticism of the video. I hate the exposition that bookends the video with the Cheaters TV show and the bootleg Bill Burr/Joel McHale host. Just get into the video. Trust me, folks ain’t checking music videos for story arcs. Plus people can figure out she’s humpin’ around. All that said, another awesome track juxtaposing dubstep with Southern funk. T.I. is a bonus. I can take or leave him, but he does validate these dudes. They need to be bigger. And if this is the first time you’ve heard of Watch The Duck, check the video that got me open, “Poppin’ Off.” Then cop the Anatidaephobia EP on iTunes now....
