Beyonce – Drunk in Love (Weeknd Remix) Feb16

Beyonce – Drunk in Love (Weeknd Remix)...

Here’s the latest remix of Beyonce’s hit “Drunk In Love”. This one is a bit different as there is no Bey or Jay in this remix. It’s the Weeknd crooning over the beat while putting his own flavor to the lyrics. I dig it. Check it below. Shouts to The Fader for the...

Beyonce feat Jay-Z – Drunk in Love (Diplo Remix)...

This track is a heater! Diplo can take anything and turn it into something that you want to flip tables over when you listen to it. This is a pretty good example. Check it out...

Beyonce feat. Jay Z and Kanye West – Drunk In Love (remix – clean) Feb14

Beyonce feat. Jay Z and Kanye West – Drunk In Love (remix – clean)...

An actual remix allegedly. Sounds a bit chopped and screwed. Still has the original’s beat and melody with Kanye’s verse shoehorned in front then Beyonce and Jay. Not a complete mess like the Power (remix). This could get some radio spins. (The Angie Review via...

Shlohmo and Jeremih – “No More” Feb13

Shlohmo and Jeremih – “No More”

When NPR is promoting crossover R&B dudes, he must doing something extraordinary. It started with a teaser cut last March “Bo Peep (Do U Right)” which was thrilling left turn from a singer with that other birthday song and collaborating with a rapper unfortunately known for a birthday song. Then came the gonzo Xmas video And now the culmination. Yes, it’s very Weeknd-ish, but the wild card is the strangulating beat constructed by Shlohmo. This beat is on some Santigold “Starstruck” shit....

August Alsina feat. Jeezy – “Make It Home” Feb13

August Alsina feat. Jeezy – “Make It Home”...

Two years ago, (Young) Jeezy struck gold with “Leave You Alone,” a slow burner with Ne-Yo on the chorus. This wasn’t Snowman Jeezy, here he was channeling Ja Rule’s sensitivity without diving into the self-parody of Ja Rule’s slavish need to ryde or die for his woman. Chuck! Meanwhile, this is still an August Alsina track. This is the same “hold it down while I trap” song that has been done before. However, Alsina doesn’t overplay his vocals. He sounds vulnerable not defiant. That’s Jeezy’s job. Good work,...

Yasiin Gaye – “Anna’s Love Song” (Soul Mates Tribute) Feb12

Yasiin Gaye – “Anna’s Love Song” (Soul Mates Tribute)...

Beat amalgamator and soul purveyor Amerigo Gazaway is threatening errrr…. planning to release an album of mashups featuring the incomparable Marvin Gaye and veteran rapper/vocalist Yasiin Bey fka Mos Def. With the unfortunate name, Yasiin Gaye, Gazaway expands on his “Soul Mates” series. While the first taste, “Inner City Travelin’ Man,” was promising yet convoluted, I cannot keep up the charade after repeated listens to “Anna’s Love Song.” The art for the track is haunting in a bad way. It’s a love song, but Anna Gordy looks like a spinster aunt. I wouldn’t fuck with that with Marvin’s decomposed dick. The production starts fine enough then devolves into a fucking mess the moment Snoop’s voice appears. I don’t need West Coast fuckery in a Marvin tribute. Then Gazaway starts integrating other Mos Def songs. Now it’s just a stew with too many flavors. Let the beat ride for fuck’s sake. The more I listen to this, the more I would’ve like this better as a 3.5-minute track with one Mos verse. Not Mos Def from 4 different chapters of his career. Thanks for the worthless voiceover. Yeah we get it, there’s a reason for the song. Save that for the album. Release an edit for us....

Tiombe Lockhart – “Can’t Get Enough”...

I’ve seen her name here and there. Okayfuture has the foresight to add her producer’s name, Hudson Mohawke (Kanye collaborator), to their post. Now I’m here…listening to this song on repeat. I can’t get enough. Support! Buy Tiombe’s single at...

Childish Gambino – “I’d Die Without You” (BBC 1Xtra Live Lounge) Feb05

Childish Gambino – “I’d Die Without You” (BBC 1Xtra Live Lounge)...

First off, I would’ve loved to embed the “3005” performance, but alas here’s the link: http://bbc.in/1eqIoXp Secondly, this song was a monster hit back in 1992 coming off the Boomerang soundtrack for PM Dawn. I was even down with this super hippie shit because they were like De La Soul and UMCs. However, I also was/still am a huge KRS-ONE and Boogie Down Productions stan. So when the story about KRS assaulting and tossing Prince Be off the Sound Factory stage started circulating, well, it was very difficult for my teenage mind to continue respecting PM Dawn. They got sonned. They are soft, and fuck dat soft shit! Maybe that’s why my contemporary older rap fans can’t get with the Drakes, Kanyes, and Childish Gambinos of today’s hip hop music scene. But this song is still fire. Like KRS-ONE said, “Maybe we should rethink the strategy.” Hat tip to the...

T-Pain feat. Young Cash – “Royals” (T-Mix)...

Jhene Aiko – “Everything Must Go” (alternate) Jan31

Jhene Aiko – “Everything Must Go” (alternate)...

For the record I listened to the alternate version first and was instantly sprung on the jazzyfatnasteeness. I was also prepared to diss the original into oblivion. Now after multiple listens, they both have their purposes for life. The original is certainly modern R&B/pop with its fuzzy keyboards, hard kicks, and some ethereal buzz in the background. The alternate is the song chopped up and rearranged at a jazz club. Kudos for No I.D. for adapting his styles cross-genre to find musical vehicles for Jhene’s breathy voice. (Hypetrak) original flavor jazzy...

The Foreign Exchange feat. Eric Roberson and Shana Tucker – “Better” Jan28

The Foreign Exchange feat. Eric Roberson and Shana Tucker – “Better”...

I am a big fan of Phonte (Tigallo Tigallo Tigallo). And the Latin piano groove is hot. I am not a big fan of neo-soul. And that’s the sour taste in my mouth when I listen this song. I wish this track was 3 x 16 bars of Phonte with Phonte on the hook. Instead it’s not. I think my friends will like this much more than me. (source / buy the...
