50 Cent – “The Funeral” Feb21

50 Cent – “The Funeral”...

50 Cent came on the scene back in 1999 with a Trackmasters-produced “How To Rob” which pissed a bunch of industry folk and folks from other industries. The repercussions was 9 bullets perforating his body, but 50 lived and came back with determined vigor. He released the mixtape, Guess Who’s Back, in 2002 with the track “50 Bars” serving notice of future prominence. 50 bars of pleasure, 50 bars of pain When I’m dead and gone niggas gon’ remember my name, 50 12 years at Interscope, and 50 got his freedom papers. On Feb 20th, 50 Cent broke away from Interscope/Aftermath/Shady and signed his G-Unit label to Caroline/Capitol/UMG. More control, more power, more freedom, and the first release, Animal Ambition, is due out June 3rd. We all can’t win. Some of us gotta lose. Here’s the first release, “The Funeral,” the unofficial sequel to “50 Bars.” (Complex) BONUS VIDEO: 50 Cent – “50...

Katy Perry feat. Juicy J – “Dark Horse” Feb21

Katy Perry feat. Juicy J – “Dark Horse”...

If music videos were supposed to make sense, then they should literally follow the lyrics of the song. But music is more than just the words, it’s the melody, harmony, mood, and the feeling it generates in you. Now, that’s out of the way. Here’s Katy Perry as the Alabaster Pharoah or some shit like that. Katy is turning suitors into sand. Katy is dancing with anthropomorphic kitties. She is conjuring storms and transforming pyramids. It’s the Illuminati, y’all! Obviously after the cries of occult worshipping from Katy’s 2014 Grammy performance (you try finding that video and link it to me. trust me if you haven’t seen it: fire, creep shit, brooms as poles for dancing, Juicy J. edit: hat tip to @theboujblog for helping me find a video), Katy decides to double down with this Technicolor Egyptian (read: Illuminati) mindfuck. It’s got everything: a talking sphinx, dancing blue strongmen, a headpiece that changes color with her mood, and Juicy J. It’s the Illuminati, y’all. I can’t be mad at it. This is her “Remember The Time.” This is her “POWER.” Meaning this video is a ridiculous callback to an antiquity era that couldn’t be as fabulous as its depiction. It’s the Illuminati, y’all. (OMG they are so many signs!) (iOS9) BONUS TRIPPY VIDEO: Art of Noise – “Moments of Love” Why? Obviously because “Dark Horse” sampled it. Rick Ross feat. Diddy and French Montana – “Nobody” Feb19

Rick Ross feat. Diddy and French Montana – “Nobody”...

Rozay leaks another street single from his Mastermind LP. He smartly relegates Shock G 2.0 to hook duty and Mr. Combs to recorded motivation speech duty. Nice track. Officer Ricky sounds more like Biggie than...

DJ Infamous feat. Jeezy, Ludacris, Juicy J, and Hitmaka – “Double Cup” Feb18

DJ Infamous feat. Jeezy, Ludacris, Juicy J, and Hitmaka – “Double Cup”...

This video appears today, and I have a lot of questions which were answered in this Behind The Scenes video (go here first) The formula is this. DJ Infamous is skinny DJ Khaled. He’s done this overseering before to great success. Then find a mediocre rapper turnt singer in search of a resurrection. Hitmaka FKA Yung Berg FKA Iceberg Find a willing producer like KE on the Track to make the record. Add 3 Southern rappers, preferably over-30 rappers to lend legitimacy. Recipe for a hit. Blaqstarr feat. Common – “Dear Diamond”...

Is this TV on the Radio? Is this Labi Siffre on main vocals? Why is Common “singing” tone deaf like Aloe Blacc on this record? Blaqstarr has grown far from his martial beats and autotuned vocals. After producing for M.I.A. and Rye Rye while growing the Baltimore dance sound, this song is a “radio-friendly” departure. Man, couldn’t he have gotten Mos Def to sing Common’s part?...

Illangelo and Rochelle Jordan – “What The Fuss” Feb18

Illangelo and Rochelle Jordan – “What The Fuss”...

Every article about Illangelo mentions his previous production relationship with The Weeknd. Sounds like a hard way for a man to break away from his past and move into the future, but for our site it’s a great way for the search engine robots to find us faster. Hooray for SEO! All kidding aside, this beat is not for play. Rochelle Jordan coos and slides effortlessly through Illangelo’s hazy, elastic production. This is what R&B music should become: sexy and future forward. Toronto keeps delivering....

Beyonce – Drunk in Love (Weeknd Remix) Feb16

Beyonce – Drunk in Love (Weeknd Remix)...

Here’s the latest remix of Beyonce’s hit “Drunk In Love”. This one is a bit different as there is no Bey or Jay in this remix. It’s the Weeknd crooning over the beat while putting his own flavor to the lyrics. I dig it. Check it below. Shouts to The Fader for the...

Beyonce feat Jay-Z – Drunk in Love (Diplo Remix)...

This track is a heater! Diplo can take anything and turn it into something that you want to flip tables over when you listen to it. This is a pretty good example. Check it out...

Flatbush ZOMBiES – “Lit” Feb15

Flatbush ZOMBiES – “Lit”...

The Architect has constructed a laid-back beat with a woozy horn. A perfect backdrop for him, Meech, and Juice spit some throwback-type rhymes. Good shit! From their upcoming EP, It’s All A Matter of Perspective....

Beyonce feat. Jay Z and Kanye West – Drunk In Love (remix – clean) Feb14

Beyonce feat. Jay Z and Kanye West – Drunk In Love (remix – clean)...

An actual remix allegedly. Sounds a bit chopped and screwed. Still has the original’s beat and melody with Kanye’s verse shoehorned in front then Beyonce and Jay. Not a complete mess like the Power (remix). This could get some radio spins. (The Angie Review via...

Toro Y Moi – “Cola”...

I know distance kills relationships. I tried lying to myself by saying my situation was temporary. I will go back home. I know it’s a lie. I love it here. I don’t really love it here. It’s tough. This city will accept all your dreams and suffer no fools. Home is a comforting, inviting, and forgiving. We lied to each other. We lied to ourselves. Distance kills relationships that aren’t built to last. We had strong ties but miles to go on critical attributes. Our wants seem similar. Our wants are disparate. I could project strength for only so long. I could mask the hurt with whimsy for so long. I could stretch a lie for only so far. She ended it. No whimpering. The break was resolute and absolute. I haven’t spoken to her since, and it’s a shame. Irreverant unofficial video CLICK HERE for the full list of Valentine’s Day...

Al Green – “Simply Beautiful”...

I know this about me. I know the girl I want has to be pretty. I know she’s beautiful. I know she’s too pretty for me. I constantly fight outside my weight class. That’s just the way it is. So while my pattern has not netted an abundance of ass, the dimes-to-nickels ratio highly favors the dimes in my POV. But at what cost? In the past I gave up my most precious resource, time, for the chase. And many times the pondering, the relentless pursuit, the dedication to beauty would freeze me. I put that pussy on a pedestal. And because all these girls were smart as well, my heart got hammered. I kept getting played outta position. I wanted Al’s song to come forth from my heart to lavish on a beautiful, smart woman who was foolish enough to love me back unconditionally. I was a romantic optimist. Louis CK would beg to differ. Listen to this song. Listen to deliberate torpor of the production. Al’s voice murmurs and quivers. He is determined yet vulnerable. He would give everything and more to this woman. I would give everything and more to the right woman. Original smoldering recipe. Special acoustic bonus! CLICK HERE for the full list of Valentine’s Day...

Jamiroquai – “Morning Glory”...

I have had only one relationship end without contention and bitterness. I know I caused it. I was too strong in views. I was not serious enough about serious shit. I was hard to be easy, too easy to be hard. Yet she still suffered through my emotions. Maybe because she was so pure in heart and direction, I felt like I was made to protect her from all the ills in the world. She was far more accomplished at her age than I was at mine, yet she made me feel dominant. I like to think that. During the heart of our relationship, I had purchased the O. Henry Prize Short Stories collection. The prizewinner was Kevin Brockmeier’s “The Ceiling” which I don’t remember much except for the ending. An ending which mirrored my life’s growing inflexibility vs her nascent acceleration to greatness. In the end she was too good for me. Her shy, broad smile and bright eyes are burnished into my mind and outshines the faces of girls I spent more time with during my lifetime. She is the one who got away because I was not good enough.
