Future feat. Kanye West – “I Won” Apr08

Future feat. Kanye West – “I Won”...

A not-really love song dedicated to Future’s girl, Ciara, and Kanye’s fiance, Kim Kardashian. Not as gutter as his fantastic single, “Move That Dope” with Pusha T and Pharrell. Not as earnest as his first single “Honest.” Not as sincere as (my personal favorite) the mixtape track, “Substitute Everything.” “I Won” is available on iTunes. (MissInfo)...

Nicki Minaj feat. Lil Herb – “Chi-Raq” Apr08

Nicki Minaj feat. Lil Herb – “Chi-Raq”...

Any other rapper, male or female, would be getting universal respect for dropping such a fierce verse. However, I am sure Nicki knows that her standing as rap’s current queen is tenuous and polarizing. Sonically, the beat is a more of a throwback to late 90s super underground instead of mid 10s Chicago drill music. From Nicki Minaj’s upcoming album, The Pink Print....

Coldplay – “Magic” (video) Apr07

Coldplay – “Magic” (video)...

Rather than commenting on Chris Martin’s yellow fever for casting Ziyi Zhang, his wife’s “conscious uncoupling,” or the undeniably catchiness of this track (more so than Ed Sheeran’s “Sing”), I’ll just post this quote from Christopher Priest’s novel, The Prestige. “Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called “The Pledge”. The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course… it probably isn’t. The second act is called “The Turn”. The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you’re looking for the secret… but you won’t find it, because of course you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn’t clap yet. Because making something disappear isn’t enough; you have to bring it back. That’s why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call “The Prestige”.”...

The Roots – “When The People Cheer” Apr07

The Roots – “When The People Cheer”...

I cannot do a write-up that does the same justice as Eddie Stats did on Okayplayer. Just recognize that Greg Porn and Black Thought embodied fully-fleshed characters created with great lyricism. The musicianship is at full power. And this is music for grown, thoughtful people that just happens to involve rapping. From the new Roots concept LP/anti-rap opera titled …And Then You Shoot Your...

Watch The Duck feat. T.I. – “Girlfriend??”...

This is my big criticism of the video. I hate the exposition that bookends the video with the Cheaters TV show and the bootleg Bill Burr/Joel McHale host. Just get into the video. Trust me, folks ain’t checking music videos for story arcs. Plus people can figure out she’s humpin’ around. All that said, another awesome track juxtaposing dubstep with Southern funk. T.I. is a bonus. I can take or leave him, but he does validate these dudes. They need to be bigger. And if this is the first time you’ve heard of Watch The Duck, check the video that got me open, “Poppin’ Off.” Then cop the Anatidaephobia EP on iTunes now....

Ed Sheeran feat. Pharrell Williams – “Sing” Apr07

Ed Sheeran feat. Pharrell Williams – “Sing”...

Allegedly this dude is supposed to be the future of pop songwriting or some shit! This sounds like another Justin Timberlake reference track Pharrell prepared for the 20/20 sessions. Per his interview with Zane Lowe on BBC 1 Radio, Sheeran already knows people are going to “love it or hate it.” Yeah, Eddie, that’s how pop music works. It sounds catchy enough. The acoustic guitar jangles are nice. I’m just having a hard time believing this ginger doughboy is singing anything worth listening to, says me the book cover judger. Maybe if he gets big enough, I’ll stop pronouncing his name “SHE-han” in a completely mocking manner....

Tinashe feat. ScHoolboy Q – “2 On”...

(photo credit: John Francis Peters) Tinashe has mentioned in interviews that she plays the dual roles of a babyface and a naughty girl. The nice Tinashe hawks pimple cream. The naughty Tinashe write songs about tragic relationships or in this case a very fulfilling fling....

DJ Cassidy feat. R. Kelly – “Make The World Go Round” Mar28

DJ Cassidy feat. R. Kelly – “Make The World Go Round”...

This certainly is a much better effort from musical project manager and vintage straw hat wearer, DJ Cassidy. Rather than going for the artificial flavor, he has enlisted R. Kelly to croon over his slightly-too-fast 2-step anthem. Maybe this record will give DJ Cassidy the necessary traction to promote his album, Paradise Royale, properly when it drops....

Slum Village – “Yes Yes” (video) Mar28

Slum Village – “Yes Yes” (video)...

J Dilla is officially to producing that 2Pac is to emceeing. In other words, how is Dilla still producing for folks eight years after his death? Amazing! Ha. Ghost production, indeed. Anyways this is the current incarnation of Slum Village. There is lone survivor original member and terrible MC, T3. Then there is the far less talented little brother of Jay Dee, Illa J. And the other dude who I’m not even bothering to research, Young RJ. RIP Baatin. This video has to be a farce, right? Shout out to camera holder and mouse mover, Ryan Lightbourn, for making a decent looking video with a ton of questionable visual decisions. Why are there so many establishing shots of the crew looking bored at the TV? Didn’t they already have a “Disco” video (OMG this video is also terrible!) which did not involve a disco? Why continue the tired fake Soul Train motif? Could they any actor better than the terrible John Amos wannabe to be the fake Don Cornelius? Can I get any information on the light skin girl in the video who you think is going to sing/rap/speak but is really just the delicious eye candy? If you’re looking for lyrical content, this ain’t the joint. At least, this incarnation is consistent with previous Slum Village lineups in that respect....

Chris Brown feat. Lil Wayne and Tyga – “Loyal” (video) Mar24

Chris Brown feat. Lil Wayne and Tyga – “Loyal” (video)...

What do you do when you have a very hot single with two versions for either coast and you need to film a video to keep the promotion train rolling? You install a different and weaker rapper for the visuals. Enter YMCMB’s resident Memphis Bleek, Tyga. And your social media team needs to keep chugging along, so send out a message via your Twitter handle. #LOYAL video dropping 3/24!!! let the countdown begin!!! — Chris Brown (@chrisbrown) March 22, 2014 I love how idiots are like “WTF! He’s in jail and he’s still tweeting!” or “How is LA County allowing Breezy to use social media in jail?” Think those quotes are stupid… here are some real tweets from idiots who don’t know how marketing works. Yes, Chris Brown is still in jail. Good luck, Mark Geragos. All that aside, it’s got all the trappings of a Chris Brown video. Colors, dancing, bad lip syncing, more dancing, 4th wall leering, even more dancing, shameless plugs, and did I mention he can dance? Plus his dancers. And that body (((pause))). And his dancers. And Usher!...

The Black Keys – “Fever” Mar24

The Black Keys – “Fever”

The Black Keys have had a knack for uncanny album promotions. So this time around they have gone with some UHF-style hokum which is a likely homage to Cleveland late night host, Ghoulardi. In addition, they also have Mike Tyson on the street team doing his part. Turn Blue http://t.co/N7SaVjl1eD — Mike Tyson (@MikeTyson) March 21, 2014 So combine all that and what do you got? I don’t know, I just care that the music is good. And it damn sure is! Turn Blue will be released on May 13th. Do not stare directly into the YouTube video. You will get...

Jay Electronica feat. LaTonya Givens – “Better In Tune With The Infinite” Mar17

Jay Electronica feat. LaTonya Givens – “Better In Tune With The Infinite”...

On RLTLK I berated my co-host unfairly about her dislike of the newest track from Jay Electronica. In short I questioned whether her lack of understanding of the track manifested into her dislike. Meanwhile, the entire time my very few casual listens of the track had not gleaned any real answers for me about the song other than Jay Elec’s continued desire to create music at his pace, not your desired pace. Built upon the soundbed of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Bibo no Aozora” (not Trey Songz, although this record is killer as well), Jay chooses two recorded spoken monologues to open his track. The first is The Honorable Elijah Muhammad speaking on the disappearance of Nation of Islam founder, Master Fard Muhammad. The second monologue is Professor Marvel speaking to runaway Dorothy at the beginning of “The Wizard of Oz.” Then after 90 seconds, Jay goes into a screed acknowledging his inability to convey his message on his own terms. To create art in the best way he knows how. His detractors. His hounds. His desire to come home and make a his own place in the world. With Sakamoto’s dirge setting the mood, Jay Electronica slows the listener down to get his message across his way. You have to listen more than once. You have to listen with open ears and a open mind. And then the beauty of Jay’s message, both in the opening recorded monologues and in his own bars, come through correctly....
